This past Tuesday, July 12, we received a report about the beaching of a cetacean on one of the beaches of Utila; a team made up of the Protection and Surveillance Coordinator (Francín Varela), the marine resource guard (Amiud Ferrera) and the island's Veterinary doctor (Omar Gómez) went to the scene to recover the body.
The specimen was transferred to the BICA offices where the corresponding data was collected for its respective identification and to determine the possible cause of its death. At the end of the process, it was determined that the specimen was a juvenile false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) who when separated from his mother, he was not able to get food, which caused him to weaken and later drown.
We thank the people in the community who reported the case to our marine resource guards and Omar Gómez for his valuable collaboration.

El pasado martes 12 de julio, recibimos un reporte sobre el varamiento de un cetáceo en una de las playas de Utila; un equipo conformado por la Coordinadora de Protección y Vigilancia (Francín Varela), el guarda recursos marinos (Amiud Ferrera) y el doctor Veterinario de la isla (Omar Gómez) se trasladaron al lugar para recuperar el cuerpo.
El espécimen fue trasladado a las oficinas de BICA en donde se levantaron los datos correspondientes para su respectiva identificación y para determinar la posible causa de su muerte, al finalizar el proceso de determinó que el espécimen era un juvenil de falsa orca (Pseudorca crassidens) quien al separarse de su madre no fue capaz de conseguir alimento lo que provocó que se debilitara y posteriormente se ahogara.
